New Bees Have Been Hived.

4/15/2010
The winter of 2009-2010 was hard on the Johnston Honey bees. Only a few hives survived. Poor survival may have been due to mite borne disease. It was likely also related to a late harvest last fall. The queen will continue to lay eggs and increase the hive population if honey is left on too late in the fall. Too many bees in the hive going into winter depletes the hive of food before spring arrives. New packages of bees from California were placed in the hives last weekend. It is great spring weather for bees and pollen from dandelions will be available shortly. Pollen from pussy willows and maples is already being brought into the hives by the bees that survived the winter. With such an early start on spring, it should be a good summer for beekeeping!
